Impressionism (a 19th century art movement) began when a group of artists from Paris (including Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley and other artists) began a public display of their works at their first Nadar studio exhibition in 1874. They broke with the tradition of painting inside a studio to painting outside — featuring outdoor scenes and nature, and portraying people in everyday life, using visible brush strokes and light, vibrant colors.
French critic Louis Leroy coined the actual term "impressionism" in his 1874 article entitled "Exhibition of the Impressionists," based on one of Monet's paintings — "Impressionism Sunrise" 1872 (a view of the port of Le Havre in the mist). In the article, he harshly declared... "Impression, I was certain of it. I was just telling myself that, since I was impressed, there had to be some impression in it — and what freedom, what ease of workmanship! A preliminary drawing for a wallpaper pattern is more finished than this seascape."
The term "Impressionists" was born — and today, Impressionism is recognized as one of the most important art movements in the 19th century.
Impressionist and Post Impressionist artists were influenced by Japanese prints which were discovered in the 1860s.
Japanese prints were Claude Monet's passion. The French Impressionist painter's home at Giverny is filled with works by Hiroshige (pictured above), Hokusai, Utamaro and other masters of ukiyo-e — "floating world pictures." Other preeminent artists who collected Japanese prints during the Impressionist era included Manet, Degas, Whistler, Cassatt, Toulouse-Lautrec and Van Gogh.
The last Impressionist exhibition was held in Paris in 1886.
