Coney Island, New York. The Mermaid Parade is the "nation's largest
art parade" and one of New York City's greatest summer events.
The parade pays homage to Coney Island's forgotten Mardi Gras which
lasted from 1903 to 1954. Thousands of mermaids, Neptunes, sea creatures
and antique cars flood Coney Island for the Mermaid Parade, which
kicks off the summer season for the area's boardwalk, amusement park
and attractions. Parade begins at W. 10th Street (by the Cyclone roller-coaster),
heads down the boardwalk to W. 16th Street and back down Surf Avenue
