Pumpkin Weigh-Off
Every year, Half Moon Bay's World Championship Pumpkin
Weigh-Off draws a crowd — it's FUN for kids and adults alike :)   Free Coffee & Bagels
Note: During the 2007 Pumpkin Weigh-Off, Starbucks
provided free coffee
and Safeway offered free bagels and juice to all visitors.
 Fun Pumpkin-Watching
Pumpkin growers — and their
trucks filled with giant pumpkins and oversized gourds — usually
start lining the streets behind the I.D.E.S.
Grounds by 7:30am.

It's is a fun place to hang out and
pumpkin-watch while the giant pumpkins are loaded onto forklifts,
prior to being weighed in.



 






Pumpkin Trivia
The winner of the very first Half Moon Bay Championship Weigh-Off
in 1974 was a 132-pound pumpkin.
In 1991, the champion pumpkin weighed in at a mere 602 pounds.

HMB World Championship Pumpkin Winner Breaks Record
Thad Starr of Pleasant Hill, Oregon (pictured above)
took Top Prize at the 2007 Half Moon Bay World Championship Pumpkin
Weigh-Off. His winning
pumpkin
tipped
the
scales at an impressive 1,524 pounds — breaking the
2006 record by over 300 pounds!
 California Record 2007
A 1,535-pound record
for a pumpkin was set this weekend in Elk Grove (Sacramento County)
by Pete Glasier of
Napa.
World Record 2007
The World Record Pumpkin — a 1,680-pound squash — was
grown this year by Joe Jutras of Rhode Island.

Place Winner 2007
Runner-up Joel Holland of Puyallup,
WA (2006 World Championship winner) also had an impressive showing — his
pumpkin (above right) weighed in at 1,384 pounds, beating his previous
record by over 100 pounds.

3rd Place Winner 2007
Jim Sherwood of Mulino, Oregon
placed third in the competition with his 1,348-pound winning
pumpkin (Jim and pumpkin
pictured left above).
Half Moon Bay Coastside Pumpkin Winner 2007
Local farmer John Muller (below)
set a record for Coastside-grown pumpkins with an 814-pound
Gourd. The Top Local Pumpkin was a 1,292-pound gourd grown
by Leonardo Urena of Napa.

Eric Carlson of Portola Valley won
for "The Most Beautiful" pumpkin.

John's Pumpkin Farm in Half Moon Bay — tied with Mike
Pezzini of
Royal Oaks, California for the
"Most Beautiful Pumpkin" in 2005.

Giant
Pumpkin "Dice"
John's unique Giant Pumpkin Dice (pictured below) were
a Big Hit at the 2006 Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Weigh-Off.

2006 World Championship Pumpkin Winner
Joel Holland of Puyallup, WA did it again! His 1,223-pound
Atlantic Giant won Top Prize at the 2006 Half Moon Bay Pumpkin
Weigh-Off. The partially-covered winning pumpkin is pictured
below, in
Joel's pick-up
truck.
 
3rd Prize 2006 Winner and
Biggest from State of California
Cindi Glasier of Napa, CA won
3rd place with her 1,147-pound
pumpkin (photos below).

2005
World Championship Pumpkin Winner
Joel Holland of Puyallup, WA tied
his own Half Moon Bay record (set in 2004) with a 1,229-pound Atlantic Giant
(photo below),
taking the Top Prize.
