Originally hailing from London makes
me yearn for British fare now and again.
When I get those cravings, we head to one
of our
favorite
English
Tea
Houses on the Peninsula. Nestled in the heart of San Carlos,
The English Rose is frequented by British expatriates and locals
alike.
Charming and cozy best describes the small dining room. Its rose-covered
walls are filled with paintings of English country cottages and
British Royalty.
Food
Enjoy a full English Breakfast —
Eggs served with a choice of two sides: Bacon, English
Sausage, Potatoes,
Fried Tomatoes or "Rumbledethumps" (better known as "Bubble
& Squeak" — potatoes
fried
with
cabbage
and
onion).
For lighter appetites, Eggs with Scones, Crumpets
or
Toast are
the order of the day.
British Luncheon favorites include:
Cornish
Pastie (beef
and vegetables wrapped in a flaky pastry shell), Shepherd's
Pie, Chicken Curry Salad, Bangers & Mash (grilled
English sausages and mashed potatoes),
Ploughman's (assorted cheeses, a crusty roll, apple,
homemade chutney, and pickled onions), English Tea Sandwiches and
more... Yum!

Do what the Brits do and relax with an afternoon "cuppa" (cup
of tea).
The English Rose offers a variety
of teas, including Earl Grey (the Queen's favorite)
and herbal teas.
Tea Plates
Devon Tea — two scones served with clotted cream,
strawberry jam and tea.
The Tea Plate — an assortment
of scone, cake, pastries, English tea sandwich
and a pot of tea...
the Sausage Roll and mini Jam Tart are my favorites (photo
above).
The Teddy Bear Tea Plate —
a PBJ (peanut butter and jelly) sandwich,
shortbread cookie,
fresh fruit and herbal tea.
