Great Eastern Restaurant ****

Cuisine: Dim Sum/Seafood

Description & Atmosphere
Great Eastern Restaurant is located in the heart of Chinatown — tucked away on Jackson Street, just off Grant Avenue. We've always been impressed with the quality of the Dim Sum here and apparently we're not alone — there's usually a line out the door. And even more so now since President Obama stopped by for an impromptu visit in February 2012 and ordered Dim Sum to-go!

The casual two-level restaurant fills up quickly, especially during peak times and on weekends. During our last several visits (for weekend brunch), we were given a number at the front desk and waited to be called — the place was packed and it was only 10:30am! Expect a wait of an hour or more during peak dining times — it's well worth the wait (there's plenty of little shops nearby to fill in the time). It's a fun place to come with family, friends and out-of-town guests.

Food
Great Eastern Restaurant is a foodies' delight — we're getting hungry just thinking of their incredible Dim Sum (and Peking Duck)!

Once seated, guests choose what Dim Sum they want from the picture menu, then fill out a form listing all the menu options. Dim Sum is served to your table (no push carts) hot and fresh. Portions are generous — great for sharing. Some of our favorites include:

  • Eggplant Stuffed with Shrimp
  • Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce
  • BBQ Pork Puff
  • Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf
  • Shrimp Dumplings
  • Pot Sticker
  • Baked Pork Buns
  • Mushroom Stuffed w/Shrimp Paste
  • Rice Noodle Roll stuffed with Shrimp
  • Zhiu Zhou Dumplings
  • Vegetarian Crisp Spring Roll

If any of you are interested in knowing what type of Dim Sum President Obama ordered to-go during his visit to Great Eastern, check out the list below:

  • Mushroom Pork & Shrimp Dumplings
  • Steamed Pork Buns
  • Shrimp Dumplings
  • Snow Pea Sprouts with Dry Scallops & Shrimp Dumplings
  • Cilantro Shrimp Dumplings

  • Steamed Shanghai Dumplings
  • Deep Fried Red Bean Balls

  • Mushroom Stuffed w/Shrimp Paste
  • Deep Friend Shrimps Puff
  • Rice Noodle Roll Stuffed with Beef
  • Rice Noodle Roll Stuffed with B.B.Q Pork
  • Deep Fried Crab Claw with Shrimp Paste

Parking
Street parking in Chinatown is very limited. We usually park in the Stockton-Sutter Garage, in Union Square, and walk up Grant Avenue — it's good exercise, especially after eating all that delicious Dim Sum. The restaurant is also within easy walking distance to North Beach (there are several parking garages in the heart of North Beach).
