Tony's Pizza Napoletana ****
Cuisine: Pizza / Italian
Description & Atmosphere
Tony's Pizza Napoletana is the real deal — one taste of Tony's award-winning Margherita Pizza (pictured below) and his Italian-style Spaghetti & Meatballs (smothered in an incredible marinara sauce that we could eat by the bowlful), and we were hooked!
Owner (and 9-time World Pizza Champion) Tony Gemignani is a true Pizzaiolo — he's won numerous awards, including "Best Pizza Margherita" at the World Pizza Cup in Naples, Italy in 2007. It's no surprise that the Margherita is one of the restaurant's most popular pizzas — they only make 73 per day (so get to the restaurant early before they sell out)!
The casual-style restaurant has two dining areas — the pizza room (with four different types of pizza ovens, including a 900-degree wood-fired oven) and the main dining area and bar (with bar seating). FYI... Tony's new "Pizza-to-go" spot next door features San Francisco's only 1,000-degree coal fired oven — perfect for making coal-fired New York-style Pizzas just like the ones you get in NY).
The food is sensational — the first time we ate at Tony's, we loved it so much, we came back again with friends the next day! And now it's our favorite pizzeria in North Beach.
Tony's offers several styles of pizza which include Classic American, Italian, Sicilian, Neopolitan — even Organic!
Pizzas include its famous Margherita, Marinara, New Yorker (pictured above; it's packed with flavor), Clam & Garlic, Lamb & Eucalyptus, Truffle, Pizza Campari, Spacca Napoli, Rosemary with White Rose Potato & Chorizo, Salsiccia Con Treviso, Baba Ganoush Con Stracciatella — quite a variation!
Other menu standouts include the Pizza Romano (very long thin pizzas), Strombolis and Calzones, wonderful pasta dishes (the Spaghetti & Meatballs are some of the best we've tasted) — (meatballs can also be ordered as a side dish) sure wish we had the recipe for their marinara sauce!
Be sure to order the Deep-Fried String Beans (tossed with garlic and olive oil). They're amazingly light and flavorful — bet you'll finish the whole bowl! Fresh Salads (we like the Gorgonzola Con Mele; pictured below) it complements the meal nicely.
All meals come with Fresh Bread and Olive Oil sampler for dipping — yummy too!
