Aquarium of the Bay

People lining up to buy tickets to Aquarium of the Bay at Pier 39, San Francisco, California

Aquarium of the Bay is the only aquarium devoted exclusively to showcasing the marine life of San Francisco Bay. The popular attraction is visited by over 600,000 people every year.

Conveniently located at Pier 39, near historic Fisherman's Wharf, the aquarium is a FUN place to visit while you're in the area. If you're a local, play tourist for the day — it makes a FUN family day outing... and it's educational too!

Main Exhibit Areas
Aquarium of the Bay's main exhibit areas include:

  • Discover the Bay
  • Under the Bay
  • Touch the Bay
  • River Otter Gallery

Aquatic Animals
The aquarium and nature center is home to 20,000 local aquatic animals (featuring more than 200 different species), including Sevengill Sharks — the Bay's largest predators — Bat Rays, Leopard Sharks, Skate, Jelly Fish, Anchovies, Giant Sea Bass, Rock Fish, Flat Fish, Eels, Starfish... and more!

Jellies
If you like Jelly Fish, it's worth a trip to the aquarium just to see these amazing Moon Jellies and Brown Sea Nettles.

"Under the Bay" Tunnel Vision
— Get an Up-Close View of Sharks!
Walk through 300 feet of crystal clear tunnels (holding over 700,000 gallons of filtered Bay water) and get an up-close view of marine animals indigenous to San Francisco Bay — your kids will love watching the Sharks, Bat Rays and other fish swim right over their heads! So close, you can almost touch 'em!

River Otter Gallery
The River Otter Gallery is home to otters Tahoe, Shasta, Baxter and Ryer. Tahoe is the most energetic of the otters - you'll know it's him if you see him swimming in the water chasing his tail! Feeding time takes place several times throughout the day.

Touch Pools
Always a favorite with aquarium visitors, the "Touch the Bay" exhibit space has two Touch Pools where visitors can touch marine animals. Reach out to the Bat Rays and Starfish. FUN for the whole family!

Bay Lab
— Land Animals
This area features a variety of local and exotic land-dwelling animals, including Californian Kingsnakes, Skinks and Turtles. Enjoy animal interactions, hands-on science experiments and special presentations.

Youth Group Sleepovers
in the Tunnels
at Aquarium
of the Bay
Enjoy the opportunity to sleep just inches from sharks, while species including the mighty sevengill, leopard, spiny dogfish and angel sharks swim overhead, along with nearly 200 species of other aquatic animals.

Sleepovers include a Guided Tour of the Aquarium, a fun evening of naturalist-led activities and a hands-on meeting and greeting with select animals.

Giant Pacific Octopus
Highly intelligent, Giant Pacific Octopus grow bigger and live longer than any other octopus species. Usually a reddish-brown color, they have an ability to change colors in an instant and blend into their environment. Octopus are generally nocturnal, so don't expect a lot of movement during the day.

The Octopus exhibit, features a clear bubble window at the base of the tank where kids can stick their heads up and be a part of the exhibit — we were so tempted... maybe next time :)

Note: Octopus may or may not be on exhibit during your visit
