Union Square is one of the oldest big city squares on the West Coast — dating back to the 1850s, just after the California Gold Rush. Art shows, live entertainment and special events are held at Union Square throughout the year — we love coming here to shop, eat, browse the art galleries, and people-watch.

A four-level parking garage sits directly underneath Union Square — the first underground parking facility in the world, originally built in 1941 as a bomb shelter during WWII.

Art Galleries & Theaters
Many fine local art galleries are dotted along Geary St, just off Union Square — if you like pop culture, be sure to check out the San Francisco Art Exchange — the leading gallery for original rock art and photography. We also like the Weinstein Gallery. Popular theaters include the Curran and ACT (American Conservatory Theater), both located on Geary Blvd.

TIX Bay Area
Half-Price Theater Tickets
and Visitor Information Center

TIX Bay Area walk-up box office sells half-price tickets on the day of performance and full-price tickets in advance to select events.

Premier Shopping Destination
Located in the heart of San Francisco, Union Square is the Bay Area's premier shopping destination — featuring luxury high-end fashion boutiques, major retail stores, specialty shops, fine jewelry stores, gourmet restaurants, top hotels and theaters.

Check out San Francisco's famous hills — ride a Cable Car from Union Square (at Powell and Market) and explore the city. If you feel like walking, Chinatown, North Beach and South of Market are all within easy walking distance.

Enjoy more shopping at the San Francisco Shopping Centre, located just off Union Square. Visit the nearby Crocker Galleria, a three-level dining and shopping complex, located beneath a dome of windows. It's a popular place for a low-cost lunch during the work week.

Westfield Shopping Center is one of our favorite places to shop in San Francisco — it's the largest urban shopping mall this side of the Mississippi. The impressive multi-level atrium mall features over 170 Stores, a Gourmet Food Market, Upscale Restaurants, a Food Emporium, the largest Day Spa in the city (Burke Williams Spa), a 9-screen Century Theaters multiplex — there's even a full-service Concierge Desk to help with info and restaurant reservations.
