Safari Vehicle Tour and Watusi Cattle at Safari West Wildlife Preserve in Santa Rose, in Sonoma County, California

FUN Safari Adventure Tours
Safari West Wildlife Preserve offers visitors a variety of Fun Adventure Tours, including: Safari Vehicle & Walking Tours, Private Safari Tours, School Field Trips, Virtual Adventures, Behind the Scenes Tours and Wild Encounters.

Guided Safari Vehicle Tours
(part Walking Tour)

Guided Safari Vehicle Tours are approximately 2 1/2 to 3 hours long and available for groups of 10-12 people. Naturalist tour guides are knowledgeable and fun — if you happen to get Adrian as your tour guide, say "Hi" from Alana & Barry.

Open-air safari jeeps have covered tops and open sides — everyone gets a great view of the animals. Our jeep had three rows of bench seating and a raised area on top (sits up to four people). During the tour, the tour guide rotates the group so that everyone who wants to sit on top can get a chance to do so (seat belts are provided on the top bench only).

It's really FUN sitting on top and getting a different perspective of the grounds and animals — and it's great for picture-taking!

Get an up-close view of the animals — they may touch you... but you are NOT allowed to touch them back. Expect to see almost 87 species of animals and up to 400 individual animals on the tour.

Fun Walking Tour at Safari West Wildlife Preserve - the walking part of the tour usually takes place following the Jeep Safari Tour

As part of the Walking Tour through the wildlife preserve (approximately the last 45 minutes of our tour), we visited the walk-through open-air Bird Aviary and saw beautiful birds from around the world, including the Scarlet Ibis and African Spoonbill.

We also checked out the Cheetahs, Monkeys, Lemurs and Indian-Crested Porcupines. As luck would have it, we happened to pass the Cheetah compound the night before (on our way to dinner) just as they were about to be fed, so we got a chance to see the animal keepers feeding them — it was fascinating to watch.

Afterwards, we passed by the large Desert Turtles... just as they were mating — frisky little things :)

The end of our tour brought us to the brightly-colored Macaws hanging out in the trees. Safari West is a must-see for bird-lovers.

Guests wishing to access the wildlife preserve's hiking trails must be escorted — morning hikes with Safari West staff are frequently available.

Don't Forget
— What To Bring With You

Wear comfortable, casual clothing. Bring layers. Don't forget a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and bottled water — temperatures can be high during summer months. Be sure to bring a camera, video-camera and binoculars.

Also, if you're planning on staying overnight, bring a flashlight, if you have one — more are available at Safari West if needed. It's helpful in finding your way back to your tent at night.

FYI
Be prepared to take a break from talking, browsing and tweeting on your cell phone — we managed to get a weak signal in the Elephant Room at the Savannah Cafe :)

Enjoy reconnecting to nature and relax — the world can wait a day or two...
