Nathan's July 4th International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island
Nathan's famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Competition began in 1916. Today, the event featuring top eaters from around the world, is more popular than ever!

Every year, thousands of people come to Coney Island to cheer on contestants as they compete to eat the most hot dogs. Nathan's Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest takes place on the corner of Surf Avenue and Stillwell Avenue in Coney Island.

Hot Dog Eating Contest Hours
The competition starts at 12 noon. Arrive early (by 11am) for the best viewing — it gets more crowded every year. If you can't be there in person, watch the event up close on TV. Every year, we root for Joey Chestnut - he's one of our San Francisco Bay Area locals.


First-Ever Women's Competition
July 4, 2011 marked the first-ever women's competition — Sonya "Black Widow" Thomas claimed victory by eating an impressive 40 hot dogs, one short of her record. Juliet Lee (2009 Rookie of the Year) and Stephanie Torres each ate 29.

— Joey's 11th Title
— July 4, 2018, Champion Joey "Jaws" Chestnut claimed victory again by eating 74 hog dogs! Carmen Cincotti was runner-up, finishing 2nd with 60 hot dogs. Matt Stonie finished in 3rd place with just 48 hot dogs.

2017 Winner
— Joey's 10th Title
— July 4, 2017, Champion Joey "Jaws" Chestnut claimed victory again by eating 72 hog dogs! Carmen Cincotti was runner-up for the second year running, finishing 2nd with 63 hot dogs. Darron Breeden finished in 3rd place with just 43 hot dogs.

2016 Winner
— New World Record
— July 4, 2016, 8-time champion Joey "Jaws" Chestnut reclaimed the title and set a world record by eating 70 hog dogs! Matt Stonie finished in 2nd place with just 53 hot dogs.

New 2015 Winner
— July 4, 2015, Matt Stonie claimed victory at Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, defeating 8-time champion Joey "Jaws" Chestnut. Matt downed 62 hot dogs, Joey was runner up with 60 hot dogs and Tim Janus finished 3rd with 35 1/2 hot dogs.

2014 Winner
— 8th Consecutive Hot Dog Win
July 4, 2014, Champion Joey "Jaws" Chestnut (from San Jose, California) claimed victory again with his 8th consecutive win at Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. He downed 61 hot dogs, Matt Stonie was runner up with 56 hot dogs and Tim Janus finished 3rd.

2013 Winner
— 7th Consecutive Hot Dog Win
July 4, 2013, Champion Joey "Jaws" Chestnut did it again with his 7th consecutive win at Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. Chestnut downed 69 hot dogs in 10 minutes — breaking his record of 68 dogs last year. Matt "Megatoad" Stonie placed second with 51 dogs. Tim "Eater X" Janus came in third with 51 hot dogs. Note: Joey's seventh win beats out the record of arch rival Takeru "The Tsunami" Kobayashi (of Nagano, Japan) who competed in a different eating contest this year.

2012 6-Peat Winner
July 4, 2012, Champion Joey "Jaws" Chestnut had his 6th consecutive win at Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. Chestnut downed 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes — he tied his personal best 2009 record of 68 dogs. Runner-up was Tim "Eater X" Janus with an impressive 52 hot dogs. Patrick "Deep Dish" Bertoletti came in third with 51 dogs. As in the previous two years, Joey's arch rival Takeru "The Tsunami" Kobayashi (of Nagano, Japan) didn't compete.

2011 5-Peat Winner
July 4, 2011, Champion Joey "Jaws" Chestnut had his 5th consecutive win at Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. Like last year, his arch rival Takeru "The Tsunami" Kobayashi (of Nagano, Japan) didn't compete. Chestnut downed 62 hot dogs in ten minutes — just short of his 2009 record of 68 dogs. The runner-up was Patrick "Deep Dish" Bertoletti, with an impressive 53. Tim "Eater X" Janus came in third with 45 dogs.

Joey "Jaws" Chestnut claimed victory again with his fourth consecutive win at Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. His arch rival Takeru "The Tsunami" Kobayashi (of Nagano, Japan) didn't compete this year due to a contract dispute. Chestnut downed 54 hot dogs in ten minutes — far short of his 2009 record of 68 dogs. The runner-up was Tim "Eater X" Janus, with an impressive 45. Patrick "Deep Dish" Bertoletti came in third with 37 dogs.

July 4, 2009
Joey Chestnut claimed victory again with a 3-Peat Win over his arch rival Takeru "The Tsunami" Kobayashi. Chestnut downed a record 68 hot dogs over Kobayashi's 64 1/2 in 10 minutes. Patrick Bertoletti came in third with an impressive 55 hot dogs.

In 2008
Joey Chestnut beat Takeru Kobayashi in a dramatic five-dog overtime, after both ate 59 Nathan's Famous hot dogs and buns in the 10-minute regulation match. Chestnut finished his plate in 50 seconds, seven seconds before Kobayashi.

In 2007

wolfed down a record 66 Nathan's Famous hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes to unseat six-time champ Takeru Kobayashi.

All-You-Can-Eat in 10 Minutes
In 2008, Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest rules were changed. The regulation match was reduced to 10 minutes from the previous years' 12-minute eat-off. Today, the 10-minute match stands.
