Cool Things To Do
& Stuff to Avoid in New Orleans

New Orleans Jazz Musicians

Ed's Cool Things To Do
Ed Franklin, one of our San Francisco friends, wanted to share his "Cool Things To Do" in New Orleans with our Love to Eat and Travel readers. Check 'em out next time you're in the Big Easy :)

1. Natchez Paddlewheel Tour
Not at all hokey or touristy, crisp narration, nice views, even the engine room is open. A great way to feel the cool breezes while sitting down and watching the busy waterfront.

Book Steamboat Natchez Harbor Cruise and Steamboat Natchez Evening Jazz Cruise

2. Algier
A free ferry boat ride away (all of 3 minutes) leaving near the casino. A very cute neighborhood that time forgot. Walk around, see the interesting architecture and paint jobs, then stop at the local bar for a cold one and a round of pool. Friendly locals are the regulars.

3. Charles Street Trolley
For the price of bus fare, tour all the classic neighborhoods of New Orleans, seeing huge houses, Tulane University, and many other sites. The line ends after about 30 minutes, then board the inbound ride (for a second fare, incidentally). You also pass one of Emeril's restaurants.

4. The Historical Museum
Located in Jackson Square, the Historical Museum has great displays on the history of Mardi Gras and lots of actual costumes. The museum is located just to the left of the church, and it's air-conditioned! A great way to experience Mardi Gras without the drunk crowds.

Stuff To Avoid
Ed also wanted to share his "Stuff To Avoid" in New Orleans. Whatever you do, have FUN!

1. The Casino
Conveniently located near the river and the convention center, the Casino has all the charm and appeal of a Las Vegas casino. Yuck :( However, the buffet is a real steal and very popular. Go at lunch, pretty much the same food but less price.

Editors Note: Ed's opinion may differ from yours. Of course, if you love to gamble, you're gonna love the Casino.

2. Bourbon Street
Do you like a crowded street that smells like a combination of urine and vomit? Do you like obnoxious young men in their 20's screaming at the top of their lungs? How about overpriced and watery drinks? Do strip clubs owned by Larry Flint appeal to you? How about loud and bad 80's cover bands? Do I need to go on? Avoid this place or you may form the wrong opinion of New Orleans.

Editors Note: We agree to disagree with Ed on this one. We have happy memories of our last visit to New Orleans and Bourbon Street — the most famous street in the French Quarter. Packed with jazz clubs, restaurants and bars, it really comes alive after dark. Just be prepared for crowds and people who love to party!
