Alcatraz — "The Rock"

One of San Francisco's
Most Popular Tourist Attractions

Once an infamous Federal Penitentiary, "The Rock" was home to Al "Scarface" Capone, George "Machine Gun" Kelly and Robert "The Birdman" Stroud. Today, Alcatraz is one of San Francisco's most popular tourist attractions.

Located in the middle of San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz draws over a million visitors a year. The National Historic Landmark is a must-see destination when visiting San Francisco.

Alcatraz features three levels of tiny cells, where 300 of the nation's worst convicts were imprisoned during 1934 to 1963. The Cell House Tours are popular with kids and adults alike.

Self-Guided Cell House
Audio Tours

The self-guided Cell House Audio Tour gives visitors an up-close look at the prison cells, including those in solitary confinement, in addition to the main dining room and other areas of Alcatraz.

Hear actual voices of the guards and inmates who lived on the island as they recall what life "inside" was like years ago.

Audio Tours in Six Languages
Audio tours are available in six languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. Daily Ranger-led programs highlight the island's American Indian lore, military history and other subjects.

Alcatraz Tours
During the summer months and around holiday weekends, Alcatraz sells out as early as a week in advance, so we recommend you make reservations early.

Buy tickets at the Hornblower Alcatraz Landing ticket office at Pier 33 on the Embarcadero.

Annual Alcatraz Reunion
Annual Alcatraz Reunion
Every year, the Park Service hosts its Annual Alcatraz Reunion.

Former inmates, guards and families who lived on the island during its heyday, come together to share their stories...with each other and the public. Hear firsthand accounts of what life was like on the "Rock.'' As you can imagine, the people
and their stories are very interesting!

The Annual Alcatraz Reunion usually takes place on a Sunday, on the second weekend of August. Date is subject to change, so be sure to call Alcatraz to confirm ahead of time.

Alcatraz Movies
Alcatraz was featured in the 1996 film "The Rock" as well as dozens
of other movies, including "Escape From Alcatraz" — the historic site has also been the subject of numerous books and video games.

The Great Escape
Only five men are known to have escaped from Alcatraz — in June 1962. Although presumed dead, they were never found...and it
still remains a mystery to this day.

Best Time To Visit Alcatraz
The best time to visit Alcatraz — and San Francisco — is during the
Spring or Fall (April-May or September-October), when it's warm and sunny.

To avoid crowds, schedule your visit during the winters months (January thru' March) — winters
are usually mild, especially compared to the East Coast.

The fog— San Francisco's natural air-conditioner — rolls in along the coast during the summer months (mornings and evenings). Summer
is the peak tourist season, so expect crowds.

What To Wear
Dress warmly when going out on the Bay. Wear layers, as it can get chilly if it's foggy or windy, even in the summer. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. And don't forget sunglasses and sunblock.
