The Beat Museum

What Elvis was to music...

What James Dean and Marlon Brando were to film...

... the Beat Generation was to Literature.

During your next visit to North Beach, be sure to stop by The Beat Museum. It's a great place to find out everything you always wanted to know about the Beat Generation, Beatniks, Hipsters and Hippies — and the era that changed the world.

We recently toured the museum (located on Broadway in North Beach) and had no idea that there would be so much to see. Two floors are filled with an extensive collection of Beat memorabilia, including original manuscripts, letters, pictures, posters (love the 1967 San Francisco music poster on the second floor), personal items, videos — even the 1949 Hudson used in filming the screen adaptation of Jack Kerouac's "On the Road"* (one of the most popular examples of Beat literature).

Learn more about the intellectuals, writers, artists, musicians and hipsters related to the 50s Beat Generation in San Francisco, including Jack Kerouac, Allan Ginsberg, Neal Cassady, William S. Burroughs, Gary Snyder and others.

Allow plenty of time to see everything, including the video clips in the Movie Theater. Browse the Beat Museum Shop (no admission fee) for a variety of books, posters, movies, T-shirts and Beat-inspired gifts. Check out the wall prints of Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin.

Say hi to The Beat Museum's owner/curator Jerry Cimino — he's a wealth of knowledge on The Beat Generation and it's wonderful to see someone following their passion!

*"On the Road" movie, directed by Walter Salles and starring Kristen Stewart, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2012 — and opened in theaters nationwide in March 2013.
