SFMOMA
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Temporarily Closed
June 3, 2013-thru' early 2016
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is temporarily closed for major renovations. The museum will reopen in early 2016 after undergoing a 2 1/2 year expansion project that will more than double its galleries and provide approximately six times additional public space. When finished, the museum will showcase expanded SFMOMA collections and the impressive collections of Doris and Donald Fisher — one of the world's finest collections of contemporary art.

SFMOMA
SFMOMA (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) houses an impressive collection of Modern and Contemporary Art. The first museum on the West Coast devoted solely to 20th-century art, SFMOMA celebrated it's 75th Anniversary on January 18, 2010. In February 2011 the museum announced an exciting addition to its permanent collection — 195 promised gifts of works by some of the biggest names in art in the last half-century — Jackson Pollock, David Smith, Willem de Kooning, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Francis Bacon and Gerhard Richter.

Docent Tours, Audio Tours

Fisher Art Collection
— New Wing at SFMOMA

One the world's finest private collections of modern and contemporary art (more than 1,100 works by iconic 20th century artists), the renowned Fisher Art Collection (from the Gap founders, Doris and Donald Fisher, will be showcased (during the next 100 years) in a new wing that will be built as part of SFMOMA's expansion — the expected completion date for the expansion is early 2016.

Rooftop Sculpture Garden
SFMOMA's 14,400 square-foot Rooftop Sculpture Garden opened on May 10, 2009. Located on the museum's fifth floor, it can be seen from the Overlook Gallery and the glass-enclosed Pavilion Room. The Rooftop Sculpture Garden features incredible large-scale sculptures spanning the last five decades by world-renowned artists, including Robert Arneson (unique and entertaining), Louise Bourgeois (known for her famous Spider sculptures), Alexander Calder (he invented the mobile), Mario Merz, and Henry Moore (famous for his abstract monumental bronze sculptures, he's regarded as one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century).

The Pavilion
The glass-enclosed Pavilion (pictured above) features floor-to-ceiling windows, overlooking the Sculpture Garden and Garden Terrace — it contains contemporary modern art pieces in wood, concrete, steel and stone.

Garden Terrace
The Garden Terrace is located just to the left of the Pavilion and Sculpture Garden.
