Getty Museum @ Getty Villa
Permanent Collection
The J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa houses 44,000 works of art from the Museum's extensive collection of Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities, sculptures and artifacts — 1,200 works (featuring objects dating from 6,500 BC to AD 400) are on view in 23 galleries.

One of J. Paul Getty's most prized possessions in his museum collection is the Lansdowne Herakles sculpture (pictured top right). The Roman marble statue, dating back to AD 125, inspired Getty to built the Museum in the style of an ancient Roman villa.

Gallery Themes
Filled with natural light, the unique galleries are arranged by themes and include:

  • Gods and Goddesses
(Interesting Cypriot Fertility Goddess 3000-2500 BC; pictured right; 2nd from top)
  • Dionysos and the Theater
(See the Head of the Young Bacchus in Gallery 114)
  • Stories of the Trojan War
    (Gallery 110)... and more

The Museum's first level has a variety of smaller, more intimate exhibit rooms compared to the more spacious second floor galleries.

Changing Exhibitions
In addition to the Museum's permanent collection, there are also six additional galleries located on the second floor, for current and upcoming changing exhibitions.

While on the Museum's second floor, take time to go outside on the balcony — it overlooks the Outer Peristyle Garden and 220-foot-long reflecting pool (and Pacific Ocean in the background) — the view is stunning and it's a great place to take a picture.

Gallery Tours
If you have time during your visit, take one of the Museum's complimentary tours (see details below). Sign-up begins 15 minutes before the tour at the Tour meeting Place (opposite the museum's main entrance (near the amphitheater, just outside the Museum Store).
