Manhattan Beach Volleyball*
Beach Volleyball is a popular year-round
sport in Manhattan Beach. And the daddy of them all, known as the "Wimbledon" or "Super
Bowl" of Beach Volleyball, is the "Manhattan
Beach Open" — held every summer (usually in mid-July
or August) on the beach near Manhattan Beach Pier. It's the best known, biggest, and most historic beach
tournament in the world — a FUN beach event that you
don't want to miss!
More Info on Manhattan Beach Open
We're both big
fans of Beach Volleyball, especially after watching the U.S.
men's team (Olympic champions Phil Daulhauser and Todd Rogers)
and the U.S. women's team (Olympic champions Misty May-Treanor and Kerry
Walsh) win Gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.
Volleyball Walk of Fame
Many local residents have participated in the tournament and some
have even won it — winners are honored with a bronze plaque
on the Manhattan Beach Pier's prestigious "Volleyball
Walk of Fame."
"Manhattan Beach Open"
— AVP Crocs Cup Shootout
Manhattan Beach prides itself as the center of the volleyball
universe. Since 1960, it has been home to the most prestigious
volleyball tournament in the
world — the "Manhattan Beach Open" AVP Crocs Cup Shootout
— Pro Beach Volleyball
Prior to 2011, the "Manhattan Beach Open" was the biggest
of all the beach volleyball tournaments on the AVP Tour.
The AVP (Association of Volleyball Players) is
the only Pro Beach Volleyball Tour in the country. It is made up
of the best men's and women's pro beach volleyball players in the
U.S... if not the world. The annual AVP event is telecast live on TV — check
local listings for more info.
