Cuisine: Greek
Description & Atmosphere
Thanks Dave, Gill and Vaughan for recommending
Uncle Nick's Greek Cuisine. What a great little "find." This
popular neighborhood restaurant is conveniently located
just a
short
walk from Manhattan's
famous
Restaurant
Row and the Theater District.
Reminiscent of
the Greek tavernas we frequented in Santorini, the casual,
family-owned restaurant has an upbeat festive atmosphere and
a devoted following
of diners — both tourists and locals alike. During
one visit we met a local couple who eat there faithfully every
week.
Tables in the front dining room are quite close together (photo
above) and noise levels are high — there's
a little more room in the back dining area.
Food
Food is prepared wtih homestyle care and served
family style this works especially well for groups
of four or more
so you can try a little taste of everything. You can make a
meal of the appetizers alone...at least WE could!
Varied menu selection
includes traditional Greek appetizers and entrees — Spanakopita,
Moussaka, Vegetable Moussaka, Pastitsio and a variety
of Kebobs (the Gyro Plate is very good), Fresh
Seafood (Grilled Fish is
the House Specialty), Soups, and Salads.
During one visit, we split an amazing "and addictive" Tzatziki
(Yogurt, Garlic & Cucumber Dip) with Pita Bread appetizer — a must for garlic-lovers! Another popular starter is the Fried
Cheese Flambée — the
flames get everyone's attention as the dish is carried to your
table.

The whole Grilled
Flounder is
some of the freshest and tastiest fish
we've had in NY...and it's big
enough
for at
least
four people (photo above and right). Delicious Greek
Salads include tasty Dolmas — we suggest you
order a "small" if you're splitting it between
two people...the large one easily feeds four.

Uncle Nick's — A
True Heaven in Hell's
Uncle Nick's Greek Cuisine was one of the first restaurants to
come to what was then known as the "Hell's Kitchen" neighborhood — today
the area it's referred to as the Clinton neighborhood (no relation
to our former President).
 Uncle
Nick's is a FUN restaurant for a party — the
back semi-private dining area works well for larger groups (photo
below).
 Heavenly Desserts
Finish your meal off with a
fabulous dessert — Baklava,
Uncle Nick's Famous Rice Pudding, Creme Caramel, Yiaourti (homemade
yogurt, served with honey & walnuts), and Galaktoboureko
(Greek Custard Cream wrapped in Filo).
Hours
Open daily for lunch and dinner.
12 noon - 11pm.
Take-Out and Free Delivery. Reservations
Reservations are recommended for larger groups.
Parking
Street or garage parking.
Service
Good service (but not great), albeit a bit edgy.
During one visit, our waiter didn't
warn us not to order the larger sizes for two people.
Prices
Reasonably priced. Good value.
