Seattle Locks Cruise
FUN
Seattle Locks Cruise
You don't have to be a shipping enthusiast to be
enthralled by the complex workings of the Seattle locks system — originally
built to transport coal and timber from the eastern shores of Lake
Washington.
Along the way you'll be treated to stunning city
skylines and mountain views, and a trip to the "Sleepless in
Seattle" floating houseboat district (pictured below). Since 1963, this cruise has been operating on both
salt and fresh water via Seattle's famous Hiram Chittenden Locks.
Live narration teaches how the Locks function, all while experiencing
fantastic city and mountain views from Elliott Bay, Puget Sound,
Lake Union and the Lake Washington Ship Canal.
The return journey
back to your original departure point is motorcoach.

Hiram M. Chittenden Locks
People drive for miles just to see the
boats (and kayaks...as pictured below) pass through the Hiram
M. Chittenden Locks

Get an up-close view of
a lock that lowers and raises boats as they pass from the fresh
waters of Lake Union and Lake Washington into the salt water of
Puget Sound.

As you can see from the photo above, there's not
much room on either side of the boat to pass through the narrow locks — it
takes some skillful maneuvering on the part of the captain, especially
for the larger boats.
