Space Needle, Seattle, Washington

Space Needle
400 Broad Street
Seattle, WA

Seattle's Top Tourist Attraction
The Space Needle is Seattle's top tourist attraction. It stands at
605 ft and offers stunning 360°
views of Seattle and beyond.

Built for the 1962 World's Fair, the Space Needle originally got its name because people thought it looked like a space ship sitting above giant knitting needles — and it does!

The structure might look fragile,
but scientists say it is one of the safest places to be in an earthquake because of the way it
is designed.

The Observation Deck also features free telescopes inside and outside — the outdoor deck can be very windy, so dress warmly.

Space Needle Facts & Trivia
The Observation Deck features displays of Space Needle facts and trivia. Here are a few examples:

There's an interesting visual comparison of all the world's tallest structures — from Sydney's Opera House, the Statue of Liberty, and Big Ben, to Italy's Leaning Tower
of Pisa
and the Taj Mahal. The tallest is Petronas Tower in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at 1,483 ft.

Maps pinpoint the area on Lake Union where the "Sleepless in Seattle" house boat sits — it continues to be one of the most asked about sights in Seattle.

And then there's the "Alien Antennae" — The Committee
hoping for Extra-terrestrial Encounters to save the Earth (CHEESE) proffers to have plans from the 1962 Seattle World's Fair that the Space Needle was constructed to send transmissions to advanced beings in other solar systems.
