Underground Tour
If you have time during your visit
to Seattle and you like history, we highly recommend
that you
take
"Bill Speidel's Underground
Tour"
in historic Pioneer Square — Seattle's oldest
neighborhood and home to the original "Skid Row."
Historic Guided Walking Tour
Beneath Seattle's Sidewalks
The popular, leisurely (and entertaining)
90-minute
"Underground Tour" takes you beneath Seattle’s sidewalks
and streets — get an idea of what
"old" Seattle
looked like prior to
the Great Fire of
June 6, 1889
that destroyed
most of the city.

The tour begins with
a brief overview of Seattle's history inside
Doc Maynard's
Public House — a restored 1890s saloon — before
being led outside to begin the
"underground" walking tour.

After
the fire, Pioneer Square was
rebuilt and the ground level was raised to fix the city's flooding
and sanitation problems — the Underground Tour
features one of the first
known flushing toilets (photo below), also known
as the "crapper" invented
by Englishman Thomas
Crapper*.

"Original
Thomas Crapper Toilet" — currently on display in Rogues
Gallery museum
*Some believe that the great-great-grandson of Frederick Humpherson (chief apprentice to Thomas
Crapper in 1871) actually discovered
the toilet, but Thomas Crapper took the credit.

Roam the dark, damp subterranean passages that
were once Seattle's main roads and storefronts.
It's
interesting while "underground" to look up at the old
skylights as people walk over them on the streets above (photos
below).

Rogues Gallery
The Underground Tour ends at Rogue’s Gallery — access
to the museum is only available
to
"ticketed
Underground Tour"
guests.

Tours
The Underground Tour is one of Seattle's most popular
attractions — you can even get married in the Underground!

Tours are offered on a first-come, first-serve
basis. Based on its popularity, we recommend you arrive at least
30 minutes
in advance
to purchase your tickets.
Tours may be added during peak season or closed
for some holidays. Visit Underground Tour's web site for more
information on scheduled tours.
Note: Kids under 6 may find the length of the tour
challenging.
Private Tours
206-682-46464 Ext. 119
Private tours may be booked in advance only.
Wear Comfortable Shoes
The tour covers three different "underground" sections — about
three blocks — and includes
several flights of stairs. Dress casually and wear comfortable shoes as the ground
can be a little rugged and uneven in places.
Doc Maynards Public House is located at 608 First
Avenue, Pioneer Square — between Cherry
and Yesler Way.
