"Butterfly Town
USA"
Home to the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary,
Pacific Grove has come to be known as "Butterfly Town USA."
Annual Butterfly Parade
Each October since 1939, Pacific Grove
celebrates the arrival of the Monarch Butterflies with a welcome "Butterfly
Parade."
On the first Saturday of every
October, children and their teachers from the Pacific Grove School
District, dress in winged costumes and parade through town to
celebrate the return of the Monarch Butterflies. Fun for the
whole family!
Note: The people of Pacific Grove take their
Monarch Butterflies very seriously — there's even a 1939
city ordinance authorizing a $1,000 fine for "hurting a butterfly
in any way."
