San Francisco Earthquakes

San Francisco is famous for a LOT of things... including earthquakes. The city's two most famous earthquakes were in 1906 and 1989.

1906 San Francisco Earthquake
April 18, 2006 marked the 100-year anniversary of The Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire. Today, it still ranks as one of the most significant earthquakes of all time.

1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake
The October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake was one of the strongest northern California earthquakes in recent memory.

Lotta's Fountain
— SF's Oldest Surviving Monument
During the 1906 Earthquake, Lotta's Fountain became a central meeting place for families and survivors. The San Francisco landmark is located on the cornerof Kearny and Market streets.

EarthQuake Exhibit
"EarthQuake: Life on a Dynamic Planet" exhibit opened at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco on May 26, 2012 and will run thru' 2014.

"San Francisco" is one of our
all-time favorite movies. It stars Clarke Gable, Jeannette MacDonald and Spencer Tracy.

The MGM musical features the famous SF song "San Francisco," which became one of two official city songs on May 15, 1984.

The movie is shown every April 18th at the Balboa Theater in San Francisco in commemoration of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake
and Fire.
