Statue of Liberty
— Crown re-opened July 4, 2009

Statue of Liberty
For over a century, the Statue of Liberty
has overlooked New York Harbor. Located on Liberty
Island, just off the southern tip of Manhattan
Island, the Statue of Liberty is one of New York City's most popular
tourist attractions — drawing between 12,000-14,000
visitors daily.
Iconic Symbol
of America A universal symbol of hope and freedom (the
torch is a symbol of liberty and light), the Statue of Liberty
is one of
the world's most recognizable icons. She was a gift to the people
of the U.S. from the people of France on October
28,
1886,
in
recognition of
the friendship
established
during the American Revolution.
Designated as a National Monument in 1924, The
Statue of Liberty was restored for her centennial on July 4,
1986 — and celebrated her 100th
birthday
on October 28, 1986.

Visitors have a choice of
two tours:
1. Promenade Tour
The Promenade Tour
takes visitors through the monument lobby, past the original torch
to
the Statue
of Liberty Exhibit for a 20-30 minute Ranger-guided tour. Visitors
then go outdoors on the lower promenade and Fort Wood
for a brief talk. The area offers great views of the Statue
of Liberty and New York Harbor.
2. Observatory Tour
The Observatory Tour incorporates the Promenade Tour, plus a visit to the Pedestal
Observation Platform, where visitors have an opportunity to view the Statue's
interior framework through a new glass ceiling portal and take part in a
ranger-guided program and learn about the Statue's design.
As of July 4, 2009, the Statue's Crown is
accessible to the public (by lottery only, to give everyone an
equal chance).
